AEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

SEO gets your page ranked in a list of links. AEO gets your business named inside the answer an AI tool writes. They share a foundation: a fast, crawlable site with clear, accurate content. AEO adds direct answers, structured data, Bing indexing and proof of first-hand experience, so an AI engine can quote you.

What is SEO?

Search engine optimization is the work of getting a page to rank in Google's results for the searches your buyers make. It covers what the page says, how fast and crawlable the site is, your Google Business Profile, and the links other sites point at you. The result is a position in a list, and the buyer still has to click.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your business named in the answer an AI tool writes. The buyer asks ChatGPT or Google a question and reads a paragraph back. AEO makes your page one of the few sources that paragraph is built from, and ideally the one it names.

Do you need AEO if you already do SEO?

If your buyers ask AI tools about your service, yes. Good SEO gets you most of the way, because answer engines pull from pages that already rank and load cleanly. What SEO often leaves out is the direct answer: a short, quotable paragraph that settles the question in the first lines of the page.

It also often leaves out Bing. A site that only lives in Google Search Console can be invisible to ChatGPT.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO sits on top of SEO. An AI engine can't cite a page it can't crawl, and Google AI Overviews tend to cite pages that already rank well. Drop SEO and AEO has nothing to stand on.

How do you start with AEO on your own site?

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the three questions your buyers ask most. Write down who gets named.
  2. Open view-source on your key pages. If your FAQ answers and schema aren't in the raw HTML, many AI crawlers never see them.
  3. Put a 40-60 word direct answer at the top of each key page.
  4. Add FAQPage schema only where the questions and answers are visible on the page.
  5. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and turn on IndexNow.
  6. Or have us do it. The free AI visibility audit covers the first two.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from AEO?
Only in emphasis. GEO (generative engine optimization) is the umbrella term for optimizing for AI search. AEO (answer engine optimization) stresses being the direct answer. In practice the work overlaps almost completely.
Does ChatGPT use Google results?
Not directly. ChatGPT search draws on Bing's index and on OpenAI's own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. A site that is only submitted to Google Search Console can be missing from ChatGPT's answers. Submit to Bing Webmaster Tools too.
Can I see AI search traffic in Google Analytics?
Partly. Clicks from ChatGPT and Perplexity show up as referral traffic from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai. Clicks from Google AI Overviews are counted as ordinary Google organic traffic. Citations that nobody clicks don't show up anywhere, so you have to check the answers themselves.
Should a small business do AEO or SEO first?
Do both on the same pages. A page that answers a real question directly, loads fast and is marked up properly serves Google's blue links and AI answers at once. There is no separate AEO website.
